Nature Journaling: Beyond the Basics with artist Kate Righter

Already familiar with the basics of nature journaling? Join artist and educator Kate Righter for a workshop that will inspire new growth in your nature journaling practice. Through a series of guided exercises, we’ll focus on drawing more confidently from nature, sharpening our observation skills, and cultivating curiosity about the world around us.

This workshop is for participants with some prior experience in nature journaling, whether from a class, a book, or self-guided practice.

Please note that exploring the gardens of Mānoa Heritage Center requires walking on uneven ground, including stone pathways, stairs, and grassy hillsides. Participants are also welcome to remain on the accessible, covered walkways with access to native plants and beautiful views. Workshops are held rain or shine.

Each participant should bring their own:

-Journal, notebook, or sketchbook
-Pencil or pen
-Colored pencils or watercolors (optional)
-Mat or towel to sit on (MHC also has campstools participants may use)
-Hat and sunscreen
-Water in a reusable bottle

Limited to 15 participants.

This workshop is designed for adult learners, but it is also open to individuals aged 12 and up. (Note: One registration will pay for you and one child under 18.)

Kula pepeiao pololei: Lauhala earrings with Kumu Wes Sen

1-session: $50.00 (includes materials kit for two pairs)

Kumu Wes Sen is back to teach you how to make lauhala earrings! The resulting earrings will be a dangle style, for pierced ears. Each participant will have the opportunity to make two pairs of earrings. Participants will have black, white, and reddish brown naturally dyed lauhala to choose from. Additional kits will be available to purchase directly from the practitioner. 

Paper Club: Blue Jeans

1-session: $45

Come and join us to make paper out of blue jeans!  Allison will have pulped denim squares cut from blue jeans. 

Open to experience papermakers only.  Must have taken Introduction to Papermaking. 

Paper must dry overnight and can be picked up on Tuesday, October 14, between 9 am - 1 pm. 

If you cannot pick up your paper on Tuesday, October 14, please call the office (808-988-1287) to coordinate a pick-up time.  Unclaimed paper will be recycled back into pulp after 1 week. 

Parol Workshop with Rosie Acopan Ramiro and Phil Fernandez-Brennan

Join educators Rosie Acopan Ramiro and Phil Fernandez-Brennan to learn how to make a Filipino Parol (Christmas Star lantern). 

Parol lanterns are displayed outside homes, businesses, and on streets throughout the Philippines as early as September through the Christmas season. 

The tradition of parol dates back to the Spanish colonial period, when Christians would carry torches and candles in a Christmas Novena procession leading up to their churches for midnight mass. 

“Parol” comes from the Spanish word “farol” which means lantern. This lantern symbolizes the star of Bethlehem and is an expression of faith and hope. 

Participants are invited to join the Filipinos in Mānoa group in the Mānoa Christmas parade this year.

Pae Lā‘au (Surf Wood) Experience with Mahi La Pierre

2-day workshop: $105 per board

Artisan and educator Mahi La Pierre is back to share his love of pae lā'au! Participants will learn about traditional and modern Hawaiian surfboards, their form, and function. They will be guided on how to design, cut, shape, sand, personalize/decorate, and finish their very own sustʻĀINAble-stoke-guaranteed-perpetual-smile-generating PAEPOʻO Hawaiian surf craft.

Note: This workshop will use hand tools (rasps, files, sandpaper) and a jigsaw (the practitioner will guide participants needing help through every step). Keiki and Opio are welcome with Makua/Kupuna. Please indicate in the registration section if you will be working with your child to make one board.  The finished board will be 32" long (see board on right in the circle image). 

Limited to 16 participants, with a minimum of 10 participants required to run the course.
