Hīna‘i Poepoe: Beginning Round Basketry
with Ke Kumu Hawai‘i - Kumulā‘au & Haunani Sing
FRI NOV 22 & SAT NOV 23 (2-days - attendance both days is required)
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
2-day workshop: $250.00 (includes materials)
This workshop will teacher participants how to start and finish a basket with a cover in the tradition of Hawaiian Basketry. Participants will learn how baskets were made with ‘ie‘ie (Freycinetia arborea) and will explore the process from start to finish, including the gathering of ‘ie‘ie, cleaning and preparation of the rootlets, and the final weaving into beautiful pieces such as hīna‘i (baskets), hīna‘i i‘a (fish traps), mahiole (helmet) and ki‘i akua (god images).
There will be an opportunity to connect virtually with the instructors for a pre-workshop orientation. Participants will be encouraged to bring a potluck-style dish to share each day so that participants can eat when they are hungry and not interfere with their focus and weaving rhythm.
